Relining Job of Mammoth Proportion for Balfour Beatty

Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering Ltd (BBCEL) recently completed a contract as part of a 15 year long water quality improvement scheme for United Utilities.

BBCEL was tasked with relining two large diameter trunk mains for a distance of approximately 20km, by installing polyethylene pipe inside the cast iron line.

In order to prevent significantly reducing the pipe’s capacity, the preferred lining technique was a thin walled liner called a folded liner or die drawn liner (also known as swage-lining).

Using the die drawn method, larger diameter lining pipes could be inserted into a smaller host pipe. With its viscoelastic properties, the polyethylene pipe can be passed through a die, effectively stretching it to reduce the diameter so it can be pulled through the host pipe. The liner’s diameter increases again as it relaxes, forming a tight seal against the old pipe.

Rather than heating the pipe, BBCEL used a cold lubricated die to decrease the diameter from 1030mm to 960mm.

Once installed, Ant Hire’s pressure testing division were contacted to provide equipment and data analysis for hydrostatic pressure tests on the pipelines, up to 12bar. This was complicated by the combination of materials involved – while the pipe would initially expand under pressure as is expected with polyethylene pipes, this would suddenly be stopped by the original ductile iron pipe.

The Pressure Testing team recommended an unconventional method whereby the main was pre-charged to 50 per cent of the test pressure (something which is usually forbidden) to reduce the creep in the pipe during the test. This was then adjusted for in the data analysis to provide an accurate assessment.
